Mid Sussex Walk

Join the Chairman on the March for Marsden

Mid Sussex District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Trumble is organising a circular walk through the Mid Sussex countryside to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, and he’d like your company.

Are you a walker and enjoy the great outdoors? Or perhaps fancy a personal challenge to raise funds to support those affected by cancer? Then join our Chairman, Councillor Trumble and start British Summer Time with a circular route in the picturesque Mid Sussex countryside to raise funds for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity on Sunday 29th March.

You can choose between a 3km walk around the lovely woodland surroundings of Hurstpierpoint or a more challenging 9km route which includes the spectacular Wolstonbury Hill. The walk is family friendly and you can even bring your dog, on a lead of course! For sponsor forms and to register online, go to www.midsussex.gov.uk/leisuresport/mid-sussex-march, phone 01444 477003 or call into the Council offices in Oaklands Road.

Each Chairman chooses charities to fundraise for during their terms of office, Councillor Trumble’s chosen charities are the Children’s Unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Woodlands Meed School.

“The Royal Marsden is an organisation very close to my heart,
as they supported my family over a number of years whilst my granddaughter received treatment for cancer from the age of 18 months,” said Councillor Trumble.

“Thankfully she is now a bubbly 10-year old, a testament to the care and specialist treatment provided by the doctors and staff at the hospital. However, I am acutely aware that not every child has such a happy story to tell, and I am determined to help promote and support an organisation that tirelessly works to support people through their darkest time.

“I’d like to thank our sponsors Collinsons, Swan Press and Paul Masson Funerals for supporting the March in Mid Sussex. I hope many people will join us for this special event.”

Mid Sussex District Council to introduce weekly food waste collections as part of new waste trial

Mid Sussex District Council will become the first District in West Sussex to trial weekly food waste collections as part of an enhanced rubbish and recycling service.

On 10 February, the Council’s Cabinet agreed to proceed, in partnership with West Sussex, with a trial collection service that includes weekly food waste and absorbent hygiene product collections.

The trial service will comprise a ‘1-2-3’ collection system as follows:

  1. Introducing weekly food waste collections and an opt-in subscription service of absorbent hygiene product collections e.g. nappies and incontinence waste;
  2. Retaining existing fortnightly recycling collections and the garden waste subscription service;
  3. Three weekly general rubbish collections.

Three areas will be selected to take part in the trial and direct communication with the residents involved will take place well ahead of the trial’s proposed start date in late April.

Councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Leader of Mid Sussex District Council said:

“In Mid Sussex, the average household refuse bin is made up of more than 41% food waste, by weight, and the evidence from other areas of the country is clear that food waste collections can dramatically increase recycling and reduce general waste.

“We know that Mid Sussex residents work extremely hard to recycle their waste and are keen to recycle more. 55% of respondents to a resident consultation in 2018 asked to be able to recycle food waste and this trial is a direct response to that feedback. If the trial is successful, we hope to be able to roll the service out to the whole District in 2021”.

Councillor John Belsey, MSDC Cabinet Member for Environment and Service Delivery said:

“Food waste has a significant negative impact on our environment and it is estimated that recycling all food waste nationally would have the same environmental benefit as taking 1 in 4 cars off the UK’s roads.

“When food waste is collected separately, an anaerobic digester can use the gas that is produced when the food breaks down to generate energy and turn the left-over material into a soil fertiliser.

“With weekly food waste and absorbent hygiene product collections, general rubbish bins will be much less full.”

The trial will be run in partnership with West Sussex County Council.

West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Deborah Urquhart said:

“This is the first trial of its type to be considered in West Sussex. Our aim would be to gain valuable feedback from residents, enabling a full review before potentially re-shaping and enhancing rubbish and recycling collections for the future.”

MP surgery at the Royal Oak

Andrew Griffith, MP for Arundel and South Downs, is coming to the village for a surgery session on Friday 28th Feb. The Royal Oak is hosting this event, but it’s strictly by appointment only, booked through his office (michelle@andrewgriffithmp.com). This is shared with the other Downland villages so appointments are limited, but the suggestion is to raise any issues you’d like discussed with the Parish Council and we’ll present the points raised as part of our discussion. Mayfield is already on the agenda, but what else would you like raised?

Fulking Fair

RSPCA Brighton will be organising the fun dog show at Fulking Fair on Sunday 26 July

Bob’s Café opening times

Bob’s café is open again this Friday 11 -2 and all Fridays for the foreseeable future.

Also open for coffee and bacon sandwiches this Sunday as long as footy not rained off!

Does anyone still have any of the café’s white melamine plates that were first used for pizza takeaways as the café is a bit short of them?
