Poynings Village Fete

On 9th June this year Poynings will be hosting its annual traditional Country Fete. Firmly established in the community calendar the event is rooted in tradition and takes place in the delightful Rectory Gardens.

Poynings is extremely lucky to possess a traditional Maypole which is brought out each year much to the delight of the children and adults who also indulge in this ancient pastime. Traditional Cream teas are served and for those requesting something a little stronger – there is always the Pimm’s Tent. Raffles, Tombola’s, plant stalls, book stalls and stalls for the children are all scattered in the garden along with many other games to partake in, including the old favourite of ‘splat the rat’ and fishing for ducks.

Children can be treated to a unique Puppet Show, not the usual Punch and Judy but a Woodland Wonder Story with handcrafted woodland puppets. While parents can be entertained by a live music performance.

This year we would urge you to invite friends and family in support of the event. All proceeds after costs are put towards the Church Restoration Fund. Poynings has a beautiful 14th Century Church and is recognised as one of the finest medieval churches in Sussex. Sadly, there is much repair work required and this can only go ahead by raising funds from events such as this.

The people of Poynings welcome all to the Fete, so please make a note of the date in your diary and come along for an afternoon of nostalgic family entertainment.

Applications open now for small business grants

Mid Sussex District Council is offering local micro businesses grant funding of up to £2000 to help them grow and expand.

The grants are available to any Mid Sussex business that has less than 10 employees and an idea for a project that will help their business grow. Up to £1500 is also available to help micro businesses take on an apprentice.
This is the second year that Mid Sussex District Council has offered grant funding to help support the local economy and encourage sustainable business growth. One of the companies to benefit dramatically from a micro business grant last year was Haywards Heath based Aquapax.

Aquapax produce natural water with a near perfect pH balance, that is packaged in renewable and sustainably produced, paper cartons. They applied for a micro business grant in 2017 to raise the profile of their brand with a targeted digital marketing campaign and they shot to prominence with a series of high profile partnerships.

The campaign enabled Aquapax to secure formal supply agreements with The Kia Oval, home of Surrey County Cricket Club, and a contract to be the Official on course water for the Dunhill Masters International Golf Championship.
“Mid Sussex is one of the strongest local economies in the country but we’re keen to do more to support businesses and economic growth,” said Councillor Jonathan Ash-Edwards, Mid Sussex District Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Resources and Economic Growth.

“The planned growth of Mid Sussex over the coming years will create thousands of jobs, see new business parks being built and bring investment in infrastructure. We want local small businesses to be able to benefit from these opportunities, grow and thrive. Last year, our micro-business grants helped more than 40 local companies to expand and develop their business in Mid Sussex and we’re keen to have the same impact in 2018.

“Funding of up to £1500 is also available to take on an apprentice and I would urge local employers to consider creating apprenticeships, especially to give more young people the opportunity of starting their career while learning a skill”.

Young Volunteer of the Year Awards 2018

Submit nominations now for the Mid Sussex Young Volunteer of the Year Awards 2018

Mid Sussex District Council is asking the community to nominate young people who go the extra mile to help others, or who work to improve the local area, for a special award.

Many young people give up their time and effort to make Mid Sussex a better place and Mid Sussex District Council think it’s important to recognise these exceptional individuals.

Nominations are open now for the Mid Sussex District Council Young Volunteer of the Year Awards 2018 and the Council is asking local people to give outstanding young individuals their moment in the spotlight by nominating them.

The awards are open to anyone aged 14-21 who has completed a minimum of 10 hours volunteering. In previous years nominees have been involved with a range of projects including volunteering at a disabled riding school, working to raise awareness of domestic abuse and helping the Police to build relationships with the gypsy and traveller community.

There are three Young Volunteer of the Year Award categories:

  • Young Community Volunteer

Recognising those young people who have made a difference in their local community

  • Young Leader

Awarded to a young person who has demonstrated their leadership in a project or organisation

  • Young Achiever

Against all the odds, someone who has overcome significant obstacles and made a positive difference to their own lives or to other young people through education, campaigning or helping another overcome a difficult situation or personal problem

“If you know a young person who volunteers in Mid Sussex and you would like them to receive recognition for all their hard work then please nominate them for a Young Volunteer of the Year Award,” said Councillor Norman Webster, Cabinet Member for Community.

“Young people make a huge contribution to the Mid Sussex community and these awards are our chance to thank them for everything they do.
Don’t let the efforts of these exceptional young people go unnoticed.”

All shortlisted young people
will be invited to a prestigious awards ceremony to receive their certificates from the Chairman of Mid Sussex District Council and celebrate their achievements.

The deadline for receipt of nominations is 16 May 2018. For more information about the Young Volunteer of the Year Awards visit www.midsussex.go.uk/youthawards or call 01444 477495.

National Rural Crime Survey

Rural residents are being urged to have their say in a major new survey about crime in the countryside.

The National Rural Crime Survey aims to determine the true personal, social and economic cost of rural crime and anti-social behaviour across the country.

The last survey took place in 2015, when 13,000 people responded to give their impressions of crime and anti-social behaviour.

The results revealed the cost of rural crime to the country was significant – around £800m every year.

In response to this, and following a meeting involving more than 100 stakeholders, North Yorkshire Police’s Rural Taskforce was established in April 2016.

Questions in the 2018 National Rural Crime Survey cover a range of issues – from whether people report crimes to the impact anti-social behaviour has on rural life.

The survey also asks whether respondents believe enough is done to catch offenders.

The National Rural Crime Network brings together Police and Crime Commissioners, police forces and organisations that play a key role in rural communities.

Network chairman Julia Mulligan said: “I hope that everyone living or working in a rural community will spare a few minutes to complete our survey.

“It will provide a clear picture of what has improved, what challenges remain and what more government, police forces and other organisations can do to support the most isolated areas of our county.

The survey is open for submissions until Sunday 10 June. It is available at www.nationalruralcrimenetwork.net.

Get £250 towards a Silver Sunday celebration

Mid Sussex District Council is offering grants of £250 to help local groups host fun events for older people as part of Silver Sunday 2018.

Silver Sunday is a national celebration of older people and their contribution to communities. This year Silver Sunday is on 7 October and Mid Sussex District Council is encouraging local people to show their support by organising an enjoyable activity for people over the age of 65.

The Council is offering grants of £250 to any group that would like to organise a Silver Sunday event this year. The offer is available to all, from large charities right through to small community groups who would like to show their appreciation for their older neighbours.

The opportunities for Silver Sunday activities are endless. Dance lessons, a theatre trip, museum tour or simply a coffee morning, a Silver Sunday event really can be anything as long as it brings older residents together.

Silver Sunday is an annual day of fun and free activities for older people across the UK. Led by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation, it celebrates the value and knowledge they contribute to our communities while combating loneliness and isolation. Everyone can get involved, whether that’s organising an event, spreading the word, or simply attending an activity.

To apply for a grant simply complete an online application form at www.midsussex.gov.uk/grants and submit it by Saturday 30 June 2018. For further information contact Regina Choudhury, MSDC Community Development Officer on 01444 477495 or email culture@midsussex.gov.uk.
